A Day Without Space – Economic Security Ramifications – 2011

December 9, 2011

Imagine being a passenger on an airliner and the plane’s GPS signal becomes jammed. At peak time, there are over 5,000 airplanes in the sky at one time. Imagine if all 5,000 airplanes experienced this emergency.

Imagine weather forecasts that only provided information for a matter of days, not an entire week. Imagine how many of our business sectors would be affected.

Imagine our nation’s economy being pushed back to levels not seen since the 1960s…

Space assets and the services they provide impact nearly every business sector, helping businesses become more efficient and productive. Space has clearly become ingrained into our economy. What would happen if these assets were compromised?

On December 9, 2011, the TechAmerica Space Enterprise Council and the George Marshall Institute presented an engaging discussion on A Day Without Space Economic Security Ramifications.

Panelists included:

  • Captain Joe Burns, Managing Director, Technology and Flight Test, United Airlines
  • Bill Wilt, Vice President for North America Sales, GEOEYE
  • Rebecca Spyke Keiser, Associate Deputy Administrator for Policy Integration, NASA

Ms. Keiser’s slide presentation is found here.

Capt. Burns’ slide presentation is found here.
